The latter can only be assured by the full co-operation of subscribers. Continuation can not be otherwise guaranteed. PERTH AMBOY For the reasons given in the text and to show the FIRST SETTLERS, at this point, in their relation, to the close, neighboring communities of PISCATAWAY and WOODBRIDGE, the accompanying MAP of PERTH AMBOY is reproduced from 'Contributions to East Jersey History, PERTH AMBOY,WOODBRIDGE, and PISCATAWAY,' by William A. Whitehead, 1856. The locations, in contiguity, with names and dates, form a most illuminating introduction to the records and data, offered in this PARTTHREE.--O.E.M. These references are important for the origins of the Woodbridge contingent. (See also, N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg., Vol. III, 1849, pp. 149. et seq.). The illustration on the reverse is an exemplification of BENJAMIN ROLFE,Town Clerk. This is an original document, 1669-1682, in the possession ofOrra E. Monnette. Note: Scarborough and Casco were in Maine. According to SALISBURY, JOHN ROLFE b. 1550, orig. of White Parish, Wilts,England, was the common ancestor. His son, HENRY ROLFE, bp. Sept. 5, 1585, m. May 28, 1621, Honor Rolfe(Richard), and they were the ancestors of the following: JOHN ROLFE (HENRY1), b. ca. 1622-35, of Newbury. Mass., Nantucket andCambridge, m. Dec. 4, 1656, at Newbury. MARY SCULLARD. Of their children, all the sons, including JOHN, removed to Woodbridge, New Jersey. (PAIGE,p. 646). This was before 1688, as son, SAMUEL ROLFE, sold his possessionsat Cambridge, that date. (In all print, check for errors). In New Jersey, the following records: Making the Newbury origin and relationship clear, 1685, RICHARD DOLE of Newbury, Essex Co., Mass.,conveyed to John ROLF of Cambridge, Mass., a farm in Woodbridge, N. J.(ARCHIVES, VOL. XXI. p. 195). In 1698, JOSEPH ROLPH, of Woodbridge, deeded to 'his brother, BENJAMIN ROLPH,' certain land, 'on the Northsideof Jonathan Bishop's sawmill brook,' etc. (Idem, p. 293). In 1696, 'JOHNROLPH of WOODBRIDGE,' died intestate, and administration was granted to JOSEPH ROLPH of the same place. (Idem, p. 243). WILLIAM CUTTER (Cottar), was a brother-in-law, married to a sister, REBECCA ROLPH, of the above.(Idem, p. 277 and PAIGE). He also came from Cambridge, Mass., to Woodbridge. Also, in the settlement of the same estate, (Idem, Vol.XXIII, p. 394), it shows other intermarriages, as 1697, the brothers and 'sisters' of JOHN ROLPH, decedent, were JOSEPH ROLPH, BENJAMIN ROLPH, BENJAMIN CROMWELL, JONATHAN DUNHAM, MOSES ROLPH, HENRY ROLPH, et al. The deceased, clearly a son of JOHN ROLFE and MARY SCULLARD, died June II,1696. REV. JOHN WOODBRIDGE, after whom WOODBRIDGE, NEW JERSEY, was named, figured in a land transaction, at W., in 1685, with both RICHARD DOLE and JOHN ROLFE. (DALLY, p. 6). |
